Overview
With recent iOS updates, Apple introduced the Preview app on iPhone, allowing users to view and edit PDF files without needing third-party apps.
This feature lets you open PDF documents from the Cloud Drive app, add annotations, text, shapes, signatures, or highlights, and save the changes back to the original file location.
Requirement:
This feature is available on newer iOS versions, such as iOS 18+. Make sure your device is updated to the latest version to see the Preview option.
How to Edit a PDF Using Preview
Open the Cloud Drive app. Navigate to the PDF file you want to edit.
Tap the three dots (•••) next to the file or long-press the PDF.
Select Open With.
Choose Preview app
From the list of apps, select Preview.
If you don’t see it immediately:
- Tap More.
- Find and select Preview.
Enter Markup Mode
Once the PDF opens in Preview.
Tap the Markup (pen tip icon).
This will open editing tools such as:
- Draw / Sketch
- Add text
- Add shapes
- Add signature...
.
Edit and Save the PDF
Use the available tools to make your changes.
Edits are automatically saved.
When you are done, simply close the PDF.
Your edits are automatically saved back to the original file location in the Cloud Drive app.

Note: PDF editing in Preview is mainly for annotations, signatures, text, shapes, and markup. It is not intended for fully editing the original PDF text like a document editor.
